| | nauseous | ] | I just spent the majority of this afternoon playing Doom 3 and I must be getting old. The game is very dark (even after max gamma and max monitor brightness) and requires switching back and forth between the flashlight and the current weapon. I found this very annoying because of having to reload/charge the weapons. Maybe it's because I'm old and slow. I just can't handle first person shooter (FPS) games like I could in the old days! After a mere two-hour foray, I got really nauseous and dizzy because of the damned thing. Perhaps it's true, I'm nearing 21 now and I'm getting old...
( More on Doom 3... )
Last but not least, Angela and I watched I, Robot and Bourne Supremacy. Both were alright, nothing too special. I elaborate later, in the meantime, I'm off to get some sleep, I have yet another test tommorow. |

I have a class in five hours and as luck would have it, it's nothing less than two-hour lecture immediately followed by a two-hour tutorial. I'll have to force myself to sit in the front row, at least that way I'll have some reason not to fall asleep.
In any case, I guess I should try to be prudent. I might as well be productive with this new found extra time and work on my Ecology Problem Set.Updated: 2004-06-07 @ 22:34
Arguably a blessing or an insult to injury, the construction at the new Arts Building ended up cutting power to the entire campus (again!). All of UTSC went dark about 15 minutes before my first lecture. If only I had fallen asleep and skipped the class, but alas, I was in the shower at the time. You probably don't want to read more about that. So jumping ahead, the Science wing still had backup power so the lecture continued for an hour until the Registrar Office announced that all classes were cancelled due to insufficient ventilation even if the power was restored. It seems that UTSC's solid concrete Brutalist Industrialist (brutally ugly) structure, albeit sturdy, promotes the asphyxiation of staff and students. Nevertheless, this is getting ridiculous now. We already had a scheduled outage last Friday. One hour turned into six hours. Today the power was out for nearly eight hours (and for those eight hours, I slept). There's another outage scheduled for this coming Friday for another so-called "hour." Five bucks says that it'll last for more than 5 hours as well... any takers? |

Now the first thing I want to say about these is that simply passing a test doesn't make you gifted, and failing a test doesn't mean you are not. Even if the test has a fancy name such as Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS), we are obviously more than just numbers, and our achievement cannot be predicted solely on the outcome of these tests. These tests are very poor measures of that nebulous thing we call "intelligence". We are often forced to rely on them because we have no better tool to group ourselves, but it is important that we always keep in mind the propensity for fallibility.
( Curious? Here's my result... )
Anyways, take the test for yourselves and you decide. Post your result below if you want, it's all your choice. Personally my result seems a little inflated to me. | | Ashanti - Rock Wit U | ] | So as I sit here wasting time, I have just under another 4 hours to wait. At 6AM, the online course registration (ROSI) system for U of T will come online. Needless to say, there's going to be quite the mad-rush of student traffic. There are 5 courses that need and since I'm on the school network, I should have an edge over those who aren't. The internet is slow but ROSI is an internal site and that means it's not affected by the perma-lagged gateway. U of T's Computing and Network Services (CNS) sure know how to keep a system up-and-running. The downtime of late leads me to believe that CNS is either run by first-year volunteers or York-graduates.
( So let me explain how I've become such a rebel... )Updated: 2004-04-07 @ 11:31
I haven't slept all night and I just got back from speaking with the people at CNS. I'm about as annoyed as one can reasonably be while still having full control. No surprise here, it seems that no one there has any idea why my computer would be flagged like that. More evidence of the incompetence I was talking about earlier. I spoke to a total of three admins of increasing superiority (Mike Adams, Rouben Tchakhmakhtchian & John Harper). They kept referring me to whomever was above them.
After being bounced around like a MSNIA client, they got together and told me, "Well, we don't know why [the top network admin] flagged you. If anything, it's not about the traffic but rather because he saw a momentary data burst at 10Mb/sec. He probably thought you had the W32.Welchia.Worm..." The newbs continued to say that, "...as far as we can tell, you did nothing wrong. Don't worry. We shouldn't have even flagged you. A [single burst] isn't a virus." That's quite the acute observation, just imagine a distributed denial of service attack (dDoS) where the client only sent one burst to the target!
They continued among themselves about how the switch isn't properly throttling and how it needs to be reconfigured to log less discriminately. I'll forego posting the technical details but still, some of this stuff is elementary. It's obvious that 7.6Mb of data is far from unreasonable. Mr. Tchakhmakhtchian later told me that he would send an email to Celine to have her re-word the letters. He intended this to be more of a notice and not a "you're getting the boot outta rez" threat.
As a result of my complaining, they are now planning to send out a bulletin to show people how to check up on traffic (refer to the Host Detail Report link above) and they will finally post what the bandwidth limits are. At the time of this post, it's set at 500Mb/day for off-campus and unlimited traffic on-campus. Nevertheless, at the price of an hour-and-a-half of my life squandered -- this issue is finally resolved and the verdict is, not surprisingly, innocent. In closing, I'll leave you with this quote from Lawrence J. Peter, "In a hierarchy every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence." How true is that? |

It was a birthday party for Katie, we held it at Milestone on Queen St. The food was really good, great environment and decent (student-friendly) prices. Katie had originally wanted to goto a expensive sushi place, but one of the main concerns was regarding the price after someone joked about a twenty-dollar miso soup, and according to Ray, is actually realistic. Katie didn't really care as long as we could get all twelve D3 and D4 people together for this reunion dinner of sorts. Everyone save Louis and Lucy made it. Louis cited poor weather conditions as his reason for not coming and I can only assume that Lucy and Kwong probably had something planned. Students can still get busted if a switch is used because it is blasting the network at 1Gbps, but overall, there is no tracking (minimal at best) going on on U of T's internal network. The Internet gateway traffic is another story. Sorry guys, I'm gonna have to retract my hub offer to just U of T students.
So, the moral of the story, my little P2P network hub on DC++ is safe. Just as long as the members are not outside of U of T's network.

As suggested in the article, up to a quarter of current high school students are not intending on pursuing a post-secondary education. A sample of the test can be viewed here. While I can sympathize the frustration of those students who simply require a diploma in order to take up a trade. It's even more important that a standard of reading comprehension be established and maintained. An example, for those employed in skilled trades, there exists an even greater need for a minimum level of reading comprehension to ensure a minimum level of competency.
( The need for competency... )
Considering the mandatory nature of the test as well, I feel that by removing the literacy tests which some have deemed "useless", we may in fact be further degrading the education system in the long run by overlooking its hidden "usefulness". It is not discrimination but rather an attestation of ones ability. Instead of court injunctions and lawsuits, why not consider remedial action? Is a one or two-year delay in graduating such a big deal when compared to the lifetime benefits? Perhaps the government can initiate support for more remedial classes instead of squandering funds by re-writing the test. There are many forms of assistance available, so I say this, "We as a society, more so than ever, needs to look beyond the proximate wants of individuals and consider future social demands that must be met". |

All I can say is, if you haven't seen it yet, don't expect too much from this empty, hollow movie of nonsense. There is no emotion behind any of the character's motives, and there exists no moral to the story. The only characters who are allowed to have any character are the pirates and the other characters seemed to be ripoffs of archetypes from previous successful pirate movies. Speaking of characters, Johnny Depp played the part of the Pirate Captain Jack Sparrow as more of a drunk fudge-nudger than fearsome swashbuckler in the movie. With all that said however, Depp did do a memorable job in the role -- he displayed the energy needed to provide much needed distraction from the otherwise mundane plot. Perhaps to his credit, all that prancing and gallivanting around was more due to being drunk on rum than to an alternative lifestyle. He couldn't have played it straight (ha!) because it wouldn't have added the humor or nonchalance that made his character so memorable. In conclusion, I can't imagine anyone expecting anything substantial from a movie called Pirates of the Caribbean, so chances are, with expectations so low, nobody can really be disappointed. |

| | Andrew Dawes ft. Jane Coop - Sonata No. 6 in A Major, Op. 3 | ] | Although I am a week late, I finally found the time to watch the Matrix: Revolution movie. As fair warning, this rant of mine contains a few spoilers, so if you have not yet seen the movie and intend on seeing it in the future, I beg you to please stop reading right now.
( Movie Spoiler Warning! )
While Revolutions does not answer all the questions posed by Reloaded, it answers enough to satisfy those who have taken the time to understand the Matrix and its intricacies. The Wachowski brothers dared to go beyond traditional entertainment to give us something captivating to think and ponder about – and will no doubt fuel hours of water cooler philosophical debates. |
